President Reagan

President Reagan centered his campaign, and his administration, on reducing the size of government. Once in office, President Reagan made massive cuts to federal safety net programs, and shifted much of the funding that remained to programs that would purchase and offload surplus agricultural products – like the “government cheese” depicted here – into the charitable system.

In fact, the food banking system that we rely so heavily on today was born in the 1980s, largely in response to these massive cuts and the rapidly increasing need that resulted.
