Angela Davis Interview

In 1970, philosophy professor and scholar-activist Dr. Angela Davis was incarcerated for her involvement in a clash between Black radical militants and the law. Before she was eventually acquitted of all charges, Dr. Davis spent a year in jail awaiting trial — during this time, she began a hunger strike, which gained attention from the media and the support of other inmates in the California prison system. Her activism highlighted the systemic racism inherent in the carceral system, which disproportionately impacted Black people and inhibited them from fighting for their civil rights, as well as the fact that racism did not stop at the doors of the prison — Black communities were disproportionately impacted by poverty and hunger, as they are to this day.
